Madison Melley wins RCA's CD Howe Scholarship
Department of Art + Design - 17 June 2025

The Department of Art & Design is delighted to announce Madison Melley (BFA '25) has won the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) CD Howe Scholarship of $5000. This award recognizes a student who is able to sustain a passion in the arts and serve our community far into the future. Madison Melley was one of three fine art students recognized nationally with this prestigious award.
The (RCA) is the oldest national body of professional Canadian artists. Founded in 1880, the RCA is a constituency of over 650 working artists, designers and craftspersons.
Royden Mills (Sculptor, Instructor with the Department of Art & Design, and RCA Councillor) says that, "[the U of A's Department of Art & Design is a] glowing jewel of this region. [...] The tradition of studio practice lives on in all of our students, and especially Madison Melley who always works above and beyond her own expectations. [...] She is the first student at the U of A to ever use a clay 3D printer and was a terrific leader during her time here."
Madison says she was surprised to receive the award. "I am so grateful that my hard work and dedication were recognized by such a prestigious institution."
"My time at the 91ÒùĸÊÓƵ was a transformative experience. Over the course of my degree I learned from so many incredibly talented and insightful instructors, technicians, and students. The Bachelor of Fine Arts program is demanding but incredibly rewarding. I will always remember the long hours in the shared studios fondly. I am so excited to see what the future holds and what other opportunities await for myself and my classmates!"
Congratulations, Madison!
