Am I Eligible?

As a U of A student, you can participate in an Education Abroad program if you meet the eligibility requirements below.

Some institutions may also have their own set requirements, such as a higher GPA, than the minimum indicated below. You'll find this information in the Program Finder.

Exchange and Summer Programs

You must:

  • Be registered as a full-time U of A student
  • Have completed at least 12 credits by the application deadline
  • Have not reached the transfer credit limit (usually 60 credits; confirm with your faculty) for your U of A degree program.  If you've reached the limit but still seek transfer credit, consult with your faculty for options.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 in the terms with your 24 most recently completed credits.  If you don't have 24 credits completed, the cumulative GPA will be calculated in the most recent terms with at least 12 credits instead.
  • Meet the following additional and/or higher requirements if you are a student in one of the faculties indicated below:
    • In their 2 most recently completed terms at the 91ÒùĸÊÓƵ School of Business (ASB), undergraduate business students must have completed at least 24 credits of graded ASB coursework and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.  Terms considered will be limited to the Fall and Winter terms.
    • Law students require a cumulative and current GPA of 2.7
      • The cumulative GPA is the GPA from your entire time as a student in the Faculty of Law
      • The current GPA is the GPA from your most recently completed Fall or Winter term in the Faculty of Law
      • The cumulative GPA will be given more weight when deciding who gets to participate in exchange or summer programs with limited spots.
    • Engineering students can go abroad after completing 4 academic terms (can apply after 3 terms) and will need at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA from their last 2 academic terms to be considered.

Keep in mind that most courses offered during the summer are at the undergraduate level. Graduate students are still eligible to apply.

U of A alumni and staff are also eligible to apply for many of the Summer Abroad Programs
