Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- A work requisition (WR) number is created for the job, so that it can be identified and tracked.
- An email summarizing the information is sent to enggtechservices@ualberta.ca, alerting the staff of the proposed project.
- If there are supporting files to be included with the project, an email is sent to the job requester with a link to a form to which they attach the files.
- An email is sent to the Account Holder for approval. Note: The project will not commence until Engineering Technical Services receives approval from the Account Holder.
- Once the job is fully defined (after any necessary consultation) and reviewed by technical staff, it enters the workqueue.
Most of our work is billed as labour and materials.
Materials are from shop stock or purchased on your behalf; we charge only what we paid, including shipping fees. You can also provide material yourself.
Labour includes an admin fee to process your job (typically 15 minutes), as well as the engineering, programming, and technician time spent.
Labour cost varies depending on group affiliation (determined by the speed code holder), and is billed at the following rates:
- Faculty of Engineering - $65 / hr
- Other 91ÒùĸÊÓƵ 91ÒùĸÊÓƵ or National 91ÒùĸÊÓƵ Council - $85 / hr
- External to the University - $150 / hr
We can provide a budgetary estimate for jobs (with a 50% upper bound), but we do not typically provide hard quotes. We will not charge more than the time and materials actually spent on a job, even if our estimate is higher.
Please allow for additional time for quoting (up to 2 weeks).
Turnaround time varies, depending on the complexity and size of the job and the time of year. For quick jobs (less than 7 hours of labour), turnaround time may be as much as 2 to 3 weeks. Larger jobs will take longer to deliver.
A lack of complete information (drawings, specifications, material choices, etc) often causes delays. It is best to plan well ahead of when you will need a job completed; we are happy to help gather information and develop proper documentation with you as a part of our engineering services.
If you have a tight deadline, please let us know when you submit a request, but know that we cannot guarantee short notice deadlines.
Internal jobs are reviewed and billed to the provided speed code in the month following job completion / customer pickup. Job totals or unofficial invoices are available upon request; please include the work requisition number as part of the request.
While we certainly don't want to discourage pursuing passion projects as part of your academic journey, our mandate is to support research and course delivery. We are therefore unable to provide support for personal projects.
The is a great resource for 91ÒùĸÊÓƵ students and staff working on personal projects, while also learning to run a wide variety of equipment, free of charge.
