Residence Emergency Response Plan

If there is a danger inside:

Get out

  • Encourage others, in particular visitors, to accompany you out of the building.
  • Leave all personal effects behind.
  • Close all doors and openings to prevent or slow the hazard getting to you.
  • Take the stairs. Elevators will not be in service.
  • People who cannot evacuate due to mobility challenges will:
  • Report to the nearest emergency exit stairwell and remain there.
  • Identify themselves to 911 and then call Protective Services at 780-492-5050
  • Follow established evacuation routes, such as fire exits, for immediate evacuation, unless otherwise directed
  • Find/use alternate exits if necessary
  • Go directly to the nearest muster point and remain there until provided direction from the emergency responders or Residence staff. It is not safe to return to the building until an “all clear” announcement is provided.

If there is a danger outside:

Stay in

Shelter In Place (SIP)
A Shelter In Place alert is issued in response to an environmental risk such as severe weather or a chemical spill. During a SIP people are free to enter buildings to take refuge from the risk.

Hold and Secure
A Hold and Secure alert is issued in response to a threat in the general vicinity of the building. During a Hold and Secure, operations continue as normal inside; however, exterior entrances are secured and entry and exit is prohibited.

Get Out

If it is safe to do so, quickly leave the area, leaving your belongings behind.

Warn others but do not wait for them.

Once you are in a safe location, call 911 and then Protective Services (780‑492‑5050).

If you come across an injured person, do not stop, but report the person's location to emergency personnel when you are in a safe place.

Hide

If you cannot escape, get out of sight:

  • Lock and block doors, turn off lights and silence your electronic devices.
  • Hide under a desk or behind furniture or equipment.
  • Stay silent and still, and listen.

If possible, call 911 and then Protective Services (780‑492‑5050). Try to communicate silently: use text messaging, social media, or put a sign in a window.

Stay in your hiding place until emergency responders arrive. They will guide you and help you.

Fight

If you cannot escape or hide, fight. This is an extreme response and appropriate only when you are in immediate danger.

Commit to your actions and behave as aggressively as you can.

Use makeshift weapons such as furniture, backpacks and fire extinguishers.
