Keynote: Dr. Stanley Malamed
Dentist anesthesiologist

Dr. Malamed, DDS is a dentist anesthesiologist and emeritus professor of dentistry at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry. Dr. Malamed graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1969. Then completed a residency in anesthesiology at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in the Bronx, New York before serving for two years as a captain in the US Army Dental Corps at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. In 1973, he joined the faculty of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry (now the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC). Dr. Malamed retired from full-time teaching at the university in 2013.

He is a diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology, and a recipient of the Heidebrink Award (1996) from the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, the Horace Wells Award from the International Federation of Dental Anesthesia Societies, 1997 (IFDAS), and the Leonard M. Monheim Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists (2015).

Dr. Malamed has authored more than 170 scientific papers and 17 chapters in various medical and dental journals and textbooks in the areas of physical evaluation, emergency medicine, local anesthesia, sedation and general anesthesia.

In addition, he is the author of three widely used textbooks, published by CV Mosby: Handbook of Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office (8th edition 2022); Handbook of Local Anesthesia (7th edition 2020); and Sedation – A Guide to Patient Management (6th edition 2017) and two interactive DVDs: Emergency Medicine (3rd edition, 2018) and Malamed’s Local Anesthetic Technique DVD (2004) (edition 2 - 2012). The textbooks have been translated into 22 foreign-language editions.

In his spare time, Dr. Malamed is an avid runner, exercise enthusiast, and he admits an addiction to the New York Times crossword puzzle, which he has done daily since his freshman year in dental school.

Dr. Andrea Fonner
Dentist Anesthesiologist

Dr. Fonner, DMD, is a board-certified dentist anesthesiologist based in the Seattle/Bellevue area of Washington. She is a diplomate and past president of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology (ADBA), where she continues to serve as a board examiner and key contributor.

Fonner is the CEO and Founder of Anesthesiology for Dentistry, a mobile anesthesia practice dedicated to advancing safe sedation and general anesthesia in dentistry. She is also the co- creator of the first and only emergency cognitive aid and mobile app for office-based crises, now used by providers worldwide. In addition, she serves as co-founder and president of Sedation Academy, LLC, a premier global continuing education platform for dentists and staff who practice sedation.

She is co-director of the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry’s Parenteral Moderate Sedation Course and serves on the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Dental Education and Licensure (CDEL) Anesthesiology Committee. Fonner is also frequently called upon as an expert witness in legal cases involving sedation and general anesthesia.

A passionate educator and advocate for patient safety, she brings clinical excellence, teaching expertise, and practical insight to every presentation. Outside of her professional life, Fonner enjoys time with her husband, Matt, and their 12-year-old identical twin daughters, Lauren and Charlotte.

Andrew Reid
Registered nurse

Reid, BScN, MEd, is a registered nurse and simulation consultant with 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ Health Services, working mainly with the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Previously, he worked as a staff nurse in the emergency department at U of A Hospital, and as a medical technician in the Canadian Forces.

Cal Carpenter
Vice President at MNP

Carpenter, CPA, CA, is the vicepPresident of MNP’s professional services team. Working closely with medical and dental professionals, Carpenter provides valuable advice to help clients reach their business and personal goals. Carpenter’s experience in forecasting, tax planning and other key areas helps ensure his clients have a sound strategy for the future. He specializes in developing customized plans for clients interested in starting or purchasing their own practice.

Carpenter also advises owner-managers on how to operate their businesses as efficiently and effectively as possible. Through performance management, industry benchmarking, tax planning and other essential tools, he helps his clients measure their business performance and enhance profitability. Carpenter is dedicated to providing his clients with information that empowers them to make informed business decisions. He has given presentations to medical and dental groups on various key issue areas such as incorporation, Canadian tax updates, corporate investment strategies, GST, fraud and practice transition.

Carpenter earned his chartered accountant (CA) designation from the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1990. He completed a bachelor of management degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1986.

Chaylene Gallagher
Lawyer

Gallagher, BA, JD, is a partner at Bryan & Company with a primary area of practice in labour and employment law, acting for both employers and employees in drafting and litigation work.

Gallagher maintains expertise in the fast-changing landscape of employment and labour law, advising on corporate transactional work within the firm. She has appeared in multiple levels of court and provincial and federal tribunals, such as those handling workers’ compensation, human rights, and union matters.

Gallagher is a sessional instructor of employment law at the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ Faculty of Law and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.

She serves on the executive for the CBA North section for labour and employment law and is a certified graduate of the LESA Annual Intensive Advocacy course. She is involved in several entrepreneurial groups within the Edmonton area. She formerly served on the board of directors of ABC Head Start, a charitable organization providing educational and social services to at-risk preschool children. She regularly volunteers with Student Legal Services at the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ and dedicates time to other charitable legal initiatives, especially if they involve running. She currently sits on the firm’s professional development committee and enjoys helping to build the great team that is Bryan & Company LLP.

Brassard, CFP, CIM, has dedicated the majority of his career to entrepreneurship, beginning with launching his own small business and now serving as a partner at Lloyd Sadd.

His equity interest in the brokerage assures clients of his long-term commitment. His background helps him understand the unique challenges faced by business owners and dental professionals, which is particularly beneficial when creating specific insurance strategies.

He views insurance as a financial tool and works closely with clients on how to optimize its use. Whether they’re looking for life, disability and/or critical illness, Brassard possesses extensive knowledge of various product offerings and strategies and can guide clients through the benefits of each, such as potential tax advantages.

Darla Carter

Carter, RDA, has been working in the dental field for over 20 years.

Carter has been involved with continuing educational programs focused on sedation, neuromodulators, and most recently dental implants. Her interest in helping others learn and find value in the dental assisting profession, drive her to discover new and exciting ways to provide educational excellence to all.

Dr. Gregory Austin
Periodontist

Dr. Austin, DDS, MSc, FRCD(C), graduated from the University of Western Ontario and has spent over 35 years as a periodontist in the Canadian Armed Forces, as both a civilian and a serving military member of the Royal Canadian Dental Corps.

Over his long career, he has provided hundreds of both one and two-drug IV sedation procedures. In addition to his periodontics specialty certificate from the United States Army, he holds a master of science in oral biology from the Medical College of Georgia. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and a past councillor for periodontics at the RCDC.

Austin is currently semi-retired but clinically instructs part-time in undergraduate periodontics, and is involved part-time in the postgraduate periodontics program at the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ.

Dr. Jaggi Rao
Dermatologist

Dr. Rao, MD, FRCPC, is a double board-certified dermatologist (Canada and USA) and a certified cosmetic surgeon. He completed his five-year dermatology training at the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ, followed by an accredited fellowship with the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery in Southern California.

Dr. Rao is a full clinical professor of medicine at the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ, and continues to lend his expertise to various organizations. He sits on the board of directors for Canadian Association of Aesthetics Medicine (CAAM) and acts as a consultant to the government (such as the Canadian Standards Association), laser and pharmaceutical industry, and professional sports teams.

Jamie Imeson

Imeson has over 10 years of experience in the dental industry including a successful sales tenure with two of the country’s leading suppliers. He is responsible for contributing to the company's acquisitive growth by identifying partnership opportunities and building relationships with key stakeholders across Canada. Imeson completed his business education at MacEwan University in Edmonton.

Dr. Jason Brady
Dentist Anesthesiologist

Dr. Brady, DMD, completed his undergraduate dental degree at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Dr. Brady completed a hospital and private practice-based residency in Anesthesia at the University of California Los Angeles in 2012.

Dr. Brady is Past President and Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a past Director and Vice President of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. He is currently the President of the International Federation of Dental Anesthesiology Societies and the Vice President of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists. He is the co-developer of the Anesthesia 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ Foundation’s “Ten Minutes Saves a Life” emergency manual mobile application.

Dr. Brady is involved with education and serves as Associate Director for the New York University Langone Health Dental Anesthesiology program. He teaches IV sedation at the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry. He is a former faculty member of the Department of Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Orthodontics at the Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California. He has given lectures at various organizations throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Dr. Brady practices in-office mobile anesthesia for dentistry and lives in Gilbert, AZ, with his wife and their six children.

Dr. Ken Reed
Dentist Anesthesiologist

Dr. Reed, DMD, attended dental school at the Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) School of Dentistry in Portland, Oregon, earning the DMD degree. He is on faculty at a teaching hospital and three dental schools.

After completing dental school, Reed remained at OHSU where he received advanced training in anesthesia and also completed a residency in periodontology and later completed a CODA-approved dental anesthesia residency at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Reed practiced periodontics in Tucson, AZ, for over a decade while also providing anesthesia services to his patients. Over 20 years ago, Reed began providing anesthesia services to other dentists in the state of Arizona and continues to do so today, having given up periodontics in 2001.

Reed is on faculty at a teaching hospital and three dental schools. He is the program director of the Dental Anesthesiology residency at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine, He is also the associate program director of the Dental Anesthesia residency at NYU Langone Hospitals - Brooklyn, and also serves as an attending in anesthesiology in the Dental Anesthesiology, Advanced Education in General Dentistry, and Graduate Pediatric dental residencies.

Reed is an affiliate assistant professor in the Department of Periodontology at The Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry, a clinical instructor in the Department of Dentistry on the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ in Edmonton, 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ, Canada, and a professor in residence at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine.

Reed is a past president of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA). He is president of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology (ADBA).

As an author, Reed has published five textbook chapters in Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management. Two chapters were in the 4th ed. The first was entitled “The Physically Compromised Patient” and the second, “Neurologic Illnesses and Other Conditions.” Three chapters were in the 5th edition of the same text, “The Physically Compromised Patient,” “Neurologic Illnesses and Other Conditions” and “The Geriatric Patient.”

Reed partnered with Dr. Okundaye to author two additional textbook chapters, “Working with a Dentist Anesthesiologist” and “Management of Emergencies Associated with Sedation”, both in Behavior Management in Dentistry for Children. The third edition of this textbook has now been published with both chapters having been updated. He also partnered with Dr. Roy Stevens in authoring Anesthetic Adversity: Failed Sedation in Anesthesia Complications in the Dental Office, edited by Bosack & Lieblich. Reed has further contributed to the professional literature by publishing over two dozen articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Over the last 30+ years, Reed has provided over 10,000 hours of continuing education in anesthesia-related topics.

Rob Campbell

Campbell, BComm, earned his bachelor of commerce with distinction from the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ in 1993 and received the Peter Lougheed Leadership Scholarship for academic performance and athletic involvement along with the J.R. Longstaffe Leadership Award for academics and community involvement from the U of A. Campbell articled at Ernst and Young and became a chartered accountant embarking on a career in wealth management in 1999.

He has been actively involved in his community and the non-profit sector as a past board member of The Centre For Family Literacy, and of Building Markets and as a co-founder of an Evening of Wine and Words in support of the Centre for Family Literacy

Campbell is a lover of live music, an avid reader, and has a passion for travel. He values fitness and has participated in many sports over the years including snowboarding, marathon and triathlon.

This refund policy refers to the Sedation Updater's lecture tickets and courses purchased from the 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ. Please refer to the corresponding organizations for refunds relating to your accommodations and other experiences.

The 91ÒùĸÊÓÆµ offers a full refund for requests made before Jan. 1, 2026. For refund requests between Jan. 1 and Jan. 31, 2026, the refund will be 50% of the purchase. Refunds will no longer be issued starting on Feb. 1, 2026.
