Faces of WISEST: Melissa Bouvier

Melissa Bouvier
SRP 2014
I participated in the WISEST Student 91ĸƵ Program (SRP) in the summer of 2014, where I worked in Dr. Cynthia Paszkowski’s lab in the Department of Biological Sciences. My role involved aging salamander samples to support research on salamander populations in Waterton Lakes National Park. This hands-on experience sparked my interest in scientific research and gave me valuable exposure to lab work early in my academic journey.
After graduating high school in 2015, I began studying engineering at the 91ĸƵ before transitioning to the Faculty of Science. I pursued a double major in Chemistry and Biology, with a particular interest in organic chemistry and ecology.
Following my graduation in 2020, I worked as a 91ĸƵ Chemist at Applied Quantum Materials, where I synthesized silicon quantum dots and other nanomaterials for various applications in medicine, clean technology, and energy. During this time, I had the opportunity to present my research at a national conference as well as travel to Japan twice to attend Nanotech Japan, where I took part in translating research to international stakeholders.
After four years, I transitioned to my current role as Innovation Partnerships Director at Deep Tech Canada, a non-profit dedicated to positioning Canada as a global leader in deep technology.
WISEST played a key role in my career by giving me early exposure to lab research, introducing me to inspiring mentors, and helping me build connections that influenced my academic and professional path.
